The short answer
Review complex bottle shapes for manufacturability, filling, closure access, stability, decoration and protective packing. Approve more than the front-view silhouette.
Handles, sharp visual transitions, broad shoulders and asymmetry can introduce additional decisions throughout the packaging process. Ask the engineering team to identify constraints while changes are still possible.
Review handling through the line
Check how the bottle is oriented, supported and transferred. Confirm clearance for filling and closing equipment. A design that stands well on a desk may behave differently during conveying or packing.
Design protection around the shape
Identify protrusions and contact points, then develop separators or protective inserts suited to the selected pack. Evaluate whether decoration can be scuffed by the proposed packing arrangement.
Procurement checklist
- Review the complete three-dimensional drawing.
- Check base support and line orientation.
- Confirm closure access and clearance.
- Trial decoration on difficult surfaces.
- Validate a representative packed configuration.
Common question
Does an existing unusual shape eliminate the need for trials?
No. Existing tooling does not prove suitability for your closure, filling equipment, decoration or shipping arrangement. Test the complete configuration for the intended project.
